A rare and historically significant original drawing bearing the posthumous "Atelier De Nittis" studio stamp — the mark applied to works remaining in the studio of Giuseppe De Nittis after his sudden death in 1884 at just 38 years of age.
De Nittis was one of the most celebrated Italian painters of the second half of the 19th century. Born in Barletta, he moved to Paris where he became closely associated with the French Impressionists — invited personally by Degas to participate in the landmark First Impressionist Exhibition of 1874. He was equally celebrated in London and Paris, known for his elegant depictions of fashionable life, horse racing, and urban scenes, executed with a luminous, atmospheric touch.
The drawing depicts a swift, assured pencil sketch of a standing figure — characteristic of De Nittis's rapid, gestural preparatory drawings — executed on pink/rose paper, a support he used frequently. The oval "Atelier De Nittis" stamp appears at the lower right, authenticating the work as originating from his studio.
